Stephen O’Meara becomes the first individual Boston Police Commissioner.

1906

After the five-member board of commissioners is abolished, he is appointed by Gov. William Douglas. An Irish-Catholic Republican, O’Meara is subsequently described by Francis Russell as “An uncompromising martinet with no previous experience in police administration and no great affection for the Boston Irish.”
